Chapter 1: Outside the Rules
I hate this world.
Not because it is ugly.
But because of the way it runs.
Humans call it the law of nature.
The strong live.
The weak die.
To exist, you have to take existence away from something else.
A wolf eats a deer.
A human eats a cow.
A tree is cut down so that a house can stand.
A mountain is hollowed out for a few blocks of metal.
A river is turned from its course simply because humans wanted it that way.
Everything is explained by a single word.
Survival.
I do not deny it.
I only hate it.
I hate the way humans always grant themselves the right to decide everything.
To decide which forest disappears.
To decide which species deserves to exist.
To decide where a river will flow.
Even.
To decide how oxygen gets made.
Strange, isn't it.
They breathe in the air the trees create.
Then they cut down those very trees.
As if everything on this planet had been born only to serve mankind.
More than a few works have said it.
Humans are destruction made flesh.
I used to think that was only an exaggeration.
But the older I get.
The more I see the reason in it.
Do not misunderstand me.
I am not an enemy of humanity.
I am a human being too.
Every day I still breathe in oxygen.
And breathe out carbon.
I still eat meat.
I still make garbage.
I still use electricity.
I still use plastic.
I still step on countless small creatures I have never once seen.
I have no intention of becoming a saint either.
No intention of starving myself.
No intention of going off to live in a forest.
And no intention of changing the world.
Because I understand.
In order to exist.
I too am forced to run by the very law I despise.
That is the funniest part of all.
Humans always have a very convincing reason.
"We have to keep living."
The moment that sentence appears.
Every action becomes reasonable.
Hunting.
Extraction.
Seizing.
War.
Annihilation.
In the end.
All of it can be forgiven.
Only because…
We want to survive.
I do not argue against that.
If I were put in the same position.
I would probably choose the same.
Because it is the best choice a human being can make.
At least.
At that moment.
Perhaps that is why.
I have never hated people.
What I hate.
Is the rule that made people what they are today.
If every living thing is only doing the best it can to exist.
Then…
Could it be that from the very beginning.
The thing that was wrong was never us.
But this world itself?
